Oxidative Stress is the state our body is put in when the levels of Antioxidants in our body are not high enough to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals.
It plays a major role in the ageing process and can be caused by UV irradiation. When this process occurs the Free Radicals can cause premature signs of ageing, uneven skin tone and texture.
What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage or “oxidize” cells throughout the body in a process called Oxidative Stress.
The Free Radical Theory of Ageing (FRTA), states that organisms age because cells accumulate Free Radical Damage over time.
We always recommend that everyone should protect their skin everyday. This is not to just protect the skin from the UV rays, it is also to protect your skin from Free Radical Damage from the environment. Free radicals can be created from air pollution such as smog, dust, cigarette smoke as well as our good friend – the sun!
Can we reduce Oxidative Stress?
Luckily, the answer is yes! There are two main ways to reduce Oxidative Stress – avoid exposure to unnecessary oxidation and increase your Antioxidants.
Antioxidants are reducing agents and limit Oxidative Stress Damage to biological structures by passivating them from Free Radicals. They can donate an electron to a free radical so that the Free Radical doesn’t have to take the electron from the skin’s atom.
Oxidation increases when we are physically and emotionally stressed and as careful as we are, exposure to toxins is almost unavoidable. Therefore your next step would be to increase Antioxidants in your system and maintaining a careful balance of Antioxidants, either by helping your body make more or by consuming them in food or supplements or applying them topically.
A good tip would be to add Flax-seeds into your diet. The essential fatty acids in Flax-seeds help to rebuild collagen as well as boosting Antioxidants in your system.
